Biography
Protopresbyter Charilaos Efthymiou Papageorgiou was born on 23 August 1967, in Kastania, Kalampaka, under the shadow of Meteora. His father was also a priest. He graduated with distinction in 1985 from the Ecclesiastical Lyceum of Volos. He entered the Department of Philology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1985 and received his degree in Classical Philology in 1989 with “Very Good.” Through entrance examinations he entered the Department of Theology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1992, completing his studies with “Excellent” in 1997, and received with “Excellent” the Postgraduate Diploma with the topic “The Pastoral Theology of Father Aimilianos of Simonopetra” in 2009. He received his PhD from the Department of Social Theology and Christian Culture with the topic “Institution and Charism in the work of Elder Aimilianos of Simonopetra – a pastoral approach” in 2026.
He was ordained deacon (28 January 1990) and Presbyter (4 April 1993), and was appointed Confessor (15 March 1996) by the then Metropolitan of Demetrias and later Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Christodoulos.
From his youth he developed catechetical and missionary work in the Holy Metropolis of Demetrias (Catechist, General Supervisor of Camps, staff member of the Youth Office, Supervisor of Programs for the Training of Staff, Supervisor of Pastoral Care for students of the University of Thessaly, Radio Producer), while also writing articles and studies.
He served in the administration of the Metropolis as General Secretary, Secretary of the Metropolitan Council and of the Episcopal Court, a member of many committees, and Director of the Historical Archive. He served as head priest of the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, patron saint of Volos, and President of the parish program for feeding the poor. He participated as the Metropolis’ representative in conferences and study days in Greece and abroad, and was invited as a speaker to other Holy Metropolises and various bodies.
Since 2006 he has served as a teacher in secondary education.
He is married to the theologian Antonia Valamouti and is the father of a cleric.
